Castor Oil Production
Castor Seed Oil Production.
FORD has developed Technical Committees and Industry Bodies to ensure Castor oil is produced by pressing the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant. The primary Uganda body facilitating the industry is compliance with the International Castor Oil Association (ICOA), while specific "technical committees" may exist at a national or regional level to manage quality and standards.
Castor Seed Oil Production Process.
Introduction.
The FORD three varieties of GCH-2, GCH-7 and GCH-9 Castor seeds contain between 30% and 50% oil. The general manufacturing process is a simple crushing technology:
- Seed Preparation: The process begins with cleaning the harvested castor beans to remove impurities
- Pressing: The clean seeds are then pressed (often using a screw press) to extract the crude oil. Both cold-pressing and industrial methods involving heat treatment may be used depending on the desired oil grade.
- Refinement: The resulting crude oil is refined to produce various commercial grades, such as commercial or BSS (British Standard Specification) grade oil.
- Derivatives: The oil can be further processed into various derivatives for use in numerous applications, including cosmetics, lubricants, paints, and plastics.
Technical Committees and Industry Bodies.
Several organizations and committees oversee the production, quality, and trade of castor products globally:
- Uganda Castor Oil Union (UCOU): This Union unites growers, processors, traders, and consumers countrywide to improve agronomic conditions, develop new applications, and disseminate information to members.
- Castor seed & Oil Promotion Council (CSOC): This council focuses on promoting the Uganda castor industry, conducting crop surveys, and managing production estimates.
- Uganda Castor Industry Union (UCIU): This Union works in partnership with the Uganda National Bureau of Standards Uganda (UNBS) Ministry of Trade, Industries and Cooperatives (MTIC), Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), Ministry of Finance, Planning & Economic Development (MoFPED) Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), Minister of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Ministry of Health (MoH), Ministry of Works and Transport (MOWT) to standardize Uganda Pearl Castor Oil products, ensure compliance, and certify industry participants.
- Greater Northern and Teso sub region: Castor Seed Technical Committees (CSTC) under the supervision of NARO: Specific Zonal, such as Acholi, Lango, Karamoja, Teso and West Nile shall establish "Technical Seed Committees" under their Department of Green Energy and Agro Economic Development Project (GEAEDP) Agriculture. Their role is to provide recommendations and verification of seed quality and characteristics for export purposes, thereby ensuring the purity of crops grown in the country.
